About Town Magazine “Birmingham’s Best Patios” 2010
Whether your from Birmingham or a recent resident, there’s a good chance you will see a familiar face at Rojo. Nestled along shady Highland Avenue the bustling patio is never dull. You may even catch the ever popular trivia night or an opening in the side room.
B-Metro “Cafés, Picnics & Outdoor Dining” 2010
Some of my very favorite outdoor dining experiences are located along beautiful Highland Avenue on Southside. After strolling along the sidewalks there, or before heading to catch a show at the lovely, historic Virginia Samford Theatre, stop into Rojo for a wonderful lunch or dinner out on the sidewalk under the old trees, across from Rushton Park.
B-Metro “The best breakfast and brunch spots in Birmingham.” 2010
Rojo is a great bar, cheap spot for a quick dinner or to lounge and people-watch, a quick and tasty workday lunch, and on weekends, their brunch is great too. They’ve got overstuffed breakfast burritos, mimosas and Bloody Marys by the glass or pitcher, and (as far as I know), they’re the only place in town serving migas, a Tex-Mex mixture of scrambled eggs, veggies, and flour tortillas.2921 Highland Ave. S.; 205-328-4733;
B-Metro “10 Spots Open on Sunday.” 2010
Rojo Rojo’s large patio is perhaps the best place in town to see and be seen when the weather’s nice. And it’s open all day on Sunday; between 11 and 3, you can get breakfast burritos, migas, and other brunch specials, and then the regular half-Tex-Mex/half-American menu takes over until 10. Standouts include the chorizo tacos, any of the quesadillas, and a surprisingly good barbecue sandwich.2921 Highland Ave. S.; 205-328-4733;
B-Metro “10 Spots – Great Romantic Desserts” 2010
Chango at RojoRojo’s generous portions mean most people don’t order dessert, and the Highland Avenue hipster hotspot might not be the quiet, intimate type of joint you think of for Valentine’s Day. But stop by after dinner for drinks and this cheesecake–fried–in–a–tortilla dish, with two forks of course. It’s rich, decadent and affordable at $3.95. (And you can add ice cream for a buck—go for it!)2921 Highland Ave. S., 205-328-4733,
About Town Magazine “Birmingham’s Best Sit-Outside Restaurants” 2009
Rojo. Known for its pineapple salsa and eclectic crowd, Rojo is a very popular summer spot to stop by for a quick beer or sit outside and stay for hours. Having been a few times in the past couple weeks, I can tell you that the food there is delicious, and its location on Highland Avenue makes for an excellent place to people watch and sip on some margaritas. Like a little kick to your food? Try the spicy habanero puree sauce. An avid lover of extra spicy foods, not even I can handle that heat. If you’re up for the challenge, give it a try!
Esquire Magazine “Best Bars in America” 2007
Rojo is technically a restaurant. But it’s the kind of restaurant where you order at the cash register, the table turnover time runs about four to five hours, and there’s an enormous covered patio overlooking Highland Avenue and Rushton Park. That’s when a restaurant becomes a bar — when nobody thinks about leaving. Passing joggers stop to chat, everybody seems to have a dog in tow, giant multicolored Christmas lights hang from the awning, the condiments sit in six-pack beer containers on the tables, and one of the bathrooms is wallpapered in National Geographic covers. Even if it were just a restaurant, you’d still go there, because, god, that’s a good quesadilla.

“A very diverse crowd and a diverse menu, both American and Mexican, make Rojo, a restaurant on Highland Ave., an always interesting choice.
The Birmingham News “Powder Rooms with Pizazz,” July 2003:
Listed as one of their five favorite bathrooms in Birmingham.
Birmingham Weekly “Menu of Menus” 2003:
Rojo is red hot and their margarita business bustles after work as people gather to watch the sun set over Rushton Park. The patio, complete with ceiling fans and Christmas lights, provides a nice place to watch dog walkers wind along Highland Avenue. Inside, you’ll find a casual order-at-the-register system for both Latin and American cuisine. Regardless of where you sit, you can’t escape Paul Wilm’s painting of a gun-slinging, bandana-wearing amigo that rests against the wall of wine shelves. And a trip to the bathroom is like a trip around the world, what with the dozens of National Geographic magazine covers that paper the walls. Paella, chorizo tacos, chipotle pork and mushroom burritos, barbecue burritos and fried chicken soft tacos are just a few menu choices that keep the locals coming back.
